Welcome to an exciting new year at Marvin Elementary! My name is Stacy Burnette and I am the K-5 Counselor here at Marvin. I joined Marvin in March of 2009 and this year begins my 5th year as a counselor in Union County. I graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a BA in Middle Grades Education and later from UNC-Charlotte with a MEd. in School Counseling. I live in Monroe with my husband and 3 children. In my spare time, I love to read, cook, travel, and play board games with my family.
I am looking forward to working with our students this year and anticipate this being a great year! Please feel free to call me or email me if you ever have any questions or concerns.
Classroom Guidance:
Classroom guidance will begin on a monthly basis for each class starting in September. During the 3rd week of each month, I will teach lessons to K-2 classes, and during the 4th week, I will be in the 3-5 classrooms. Students will discuss and complete activities related to the character trait of the month. Parents will receive a brief note to address the topic taught each month and are encouraged to discuss these lessons at home as a family!
Individual Counseling:
Students in grades 2-5 can fill out forms to make an appointment with Mrs. Burnette at any time. These forms are located in their classrooms. Teachers and parents can also refer students to see Mrs. Burnette.
Group Counseling:
Small groups will start again in October. Students will be recommended by their teacher for a group, if the teacher feels the specific topic is relevant to that student’s needs. Parents of these students will be receiving information regarding group content, meeting times, and a permission form. Please feel free to contact Mrs. Burnette if you have any questions.
Character Education:
At Marvin Elementary, we celebrate character education and incorporate it into our daily activities. Students will be participating in the Terrific Kids program, which involves recognizing students who frequently demonstrate the character trait of the month. Students who are caught demonstrating the monthly trait will be rewarded for their endeavors. Each morning the character trait of the month is announced on school news. Students are given an example of how they can demonstrate the character trait of the month.
Bullying
There is a no tolerance policy for bullying at our school. Please see the school website for our bullying policy, which includes what constitutes bullying and the consequences for bullying at Marvin.
In October, we will begin the Bully Busters program. Selected 5th graders will meet with me to discuss bullying issues and then will prepare skits, songs, etc. that give suggestions for preventing and dealing with bullying for the school to watch on school news.
